Islam and the Question of Violence

Despite the presence of violence in many regions of the world ranging from Ireland to Lebanon to the Pacific Basin and involving many religions from Christianity to Hinduism, the Western world associates Islam more than any other religion with violence. The Muslim conquest of Spain, the Crusades - which were not begun by Muslims -, and the Ottoman domination of eastern Europe have provided a historical memory of Islam as being related to force and power. Moreover, the upheavals of the past few decades in the Middle East and especially movements using the name of Islam and seeking to solve problems of the Muslim world created by conditions and causes beyond the control of Muslims have only reinforced the idea prevalent in the West that in some special way Islam is related to violence. Contemporary Issues: 

- Muslim women wear the head-covering (hijab) in fulfillment of God’s decree to dress modestly. From a practical standpoint, it serves to identify one as attempting to follow God in daily life and, therefore, protects women from unwanted advances from men. This type of modest dress has been worn by righteous women throughout history. Prominent examples are traditional Catholic Nuns, Mother Teresa and the Virgin Mary, mother of Jesus.

- Arranged marriages are allowed in Islam but are not required. Whereas “forced” marriages, usually stemming from cultural practice, are forbidden. Divorce is permissible, however, reconciliation is what is most encouraged. But if there are irreconcilable differences then Islam permits a fair and just divorce.


Hajj Related Facts: 

- It is celebrated on the 10th day of the month of Dhul Hijja of the lunar Islamic calendar, after Hajj, the annual pilgrimage to Makkah in Saudi Arabia.

- On this day Muslims sacrifice animals which have been deemed Halal, or fit for sacrifice. They not only eat the meat themselves but distribute it amongst their neighbors, relatives and the poor and hungry.

- Did you know that Prophet Mohamed (PBUH) delivered his last sermon on mount Arafat, which is visited by every pilgrim the day before Eid Al-Adha.

- On the day of Eid, Pilgrims recite the following verse while going around the Ka’bah: Labbaik Allahumma Labbaik. Labbaik, La Shareek Laka, Labbaik. Innal Hamdah, Wan Nematah, Laka wal Mulk, La Shareek Laka Labbaik.


Historical Facts:

- On the Eighteenth of Dhul Hijjah, the twelfth Islamic month, at 10 A.H. at Ghadeer Khum, Saudi Arabia. Islam was completed and perfected after Prophet Muhammed (P) declared in front of 90,000-120,000 people, that Imam Ali Ibn Abi Talib (AS) is the Vicegerent, Caliph, Imam, and Leader after him (P).

- Prophet Muhammed (P) Said at Ghadeer Khum “O my people! Allah is my Master and I am Master of the faithful and I have superior right on and control over their lives, and this Ali is the Master of all those of whom I am Master. O Allah! Love him who loves him and hate him who hates him.”


Importance of Knowledge in Islam:

- Did you know that Prophet Muhammed (PBUH) had some important sayings regarding knowledge and some of them are “To acquire knowledge is binding upon all Muslims, whether male or female.” And “The ink of the scholar is more holy than the blood of the martyr.”
