Zaynab means an ornament or an adornment of her father. Allah (SWT) gave this name to her through His messenger who was alive at the time of her birth. Her titles were:

Siddiqa meaning the truthful one.

Sabirah meaning the patient one.

SERMON OF SAYYIDA ZAYNAB (A.S.)

Yazeed recited the blasphemous poetic verses of Abdullah bin Zab'ari Sahmi which he had composed while he was an unbeliever and also added some poetic verses of his own and said openly that he wanted to take revenge upon the descendants of Muhammad because Muhammad and his companions had killed his polytheist ancestors. Zaynab (as), the daughter of Ali rose and began speaking. She added a new chapter to the history of the Caliphate of Yazeed, which covered a period of three years and a few months, and said:

Zaynab (a.s) is the shining sun in the history of Islam and of humanity. Wherever and whenever, Imam al-Hussein (a.s) and the tragedy of karbala will be mentioned, Zaynab (a.s) will also be remembered. The history of Karbala is based on two pillars: The rising of Imam al-Hussein (a.s) and the rising of Zaynab (a.s). She was an outstanding figure in the history of Karbala endowed with divine steadfastness and fortitude. She sacrificed her two sons ‘Aun and Muhammad while fighting against despotism and upholding the importance of justice, freedom, humanity and virtues in human society. After the martyrdom of her beloved brother and her two sons, she knelt down before the Master of the Universe, on the soil of Karbala and said, “O my Lord ! Accept our humble sacrifice to You”.

Lady Zainab was born on the 1st of Shaaban (A.H). She was the third child of Imam Ali and Fatima al-Zahra. When Fatima brought Zainab to her father and said, "name her." The Imam replied, "I would not name her before Allah's Messenger.

The Meritorious Lady

She was born in Medina on the 5^th of the month of Jamadi al-Awwal in the 6^th year of the Hijra. Prophet Mohammad (SAWA) was overjoyed at the birth of his first grand daughter and named her Zainab, which means Ornament of the Father. The loving father, Imam Ali ibn Abi Taleb (AS) was overjoyed as well and so was the mother, the Prophet’s daughter Hazrat Fatema Zahra (SA).

Role after the tragedy of Karbala

On the night of Ashoor, when Yazid's army set fire to their tents, it was Bibi Zainab, (as), who saved Imam Zainul `Abedeen, as, and the children from being burnt alive. She then gathered the women and children and guarded them throughout the night. The next day, when they were being taken to Kufah, she consoled the grieving survivors when they were made to pass by the corpses of their loved ones. When the caravan reached the court of Obaidullah ibn Zima at Kufah, the evil governor mocked them by saying that he thought they were slave girls. Bibi Zainab (as) admonished him then spoke eloquently condemning both ibn Ziad and Yazid. Later, the caravan was marched to Damascus. During this part of the journey too the women and children were treated with utmost cruelty. Bibi Zainab, (as), tried her best to comfort them.

When her father, Imam Ali(a.s.), saw his daughter for the first time Imam Hussain(a.s.), who was then almost three years old, was with him. The boy exclaimed in delight, "O father, Allah has given me a sister." Hearing those words Imam Ali (a.s.) began to weep, and when Imam Hussain(a.s.) asked why he was crying so, his father answered that he would soon come to know.

Womanhood

Zaynab (AS) grew into a fine statured young woman. Of her physical appearance little is known. When the tragedy of Karbala befell her in her midfifties she was forced to go out uncovered. It was then that some people remarked that she appeared as a 'shining sun' and a 'piece of the moon'.

Growing up in Medina

Zaynab (AS) shared with-her brothers and sister the extraordinary position of having such examples to look up to, emulate and learn from, as her grand father, the Prophet of Allah (PBUH&HF) her mother Fatima (AS), daughter of the Prophet, and he'r father Imam Ali (AS), cousin-brother of the Prophet. In the pure environment that enveloped her she absorbed the teachings of Islam that her grandfather imparted, and after him her father. Here too she learnt to master all household skills with great proficiency.
