THE HOLY QURAN – PART 11 - ETIQUETTES FOR THE LISTENERS

Listening to the recitation of the Holy Quran is also a highly recommended act. It is an act that carries a lot of rewards.

The Holy Prophet (saww) has said, “Whoever listens to one verse of the Holy Quran, it is better for him than ‘Thabeer’ of gold and ‘Thabeer’ is the great mountain in Yemen”. (Bihar al-Anwaar)

He (saww) has also said, “Whoever listens to one verse from the Book of Allah, a reward of multiplying good deed shall be written for him; and whoever recites one verse from the Book of Allah, it will serve him as NOOR (light) on the Day of Judgement”. (Kanzul-‘Ummaal)

THE HOLY QURAN – PART 10 - ETIQUETTES OF QURAN: AL-KHUSHOO’

Al-Khushoo’ in Arabic means ‘to become submissive’ or ‘to display humility’ or ‘to be moved and touched’. In Quran, we have been instructed to exhibit submissiveness and highest degree of humility when reciting the Book of Allah (SWT).

“Is it not time yet for those who have faith that their hearts should be humbled for Allah’s remembrance and to the truth which has come down (to them), and not to be like those who were given the book before? Time took its toll on them and so their hearts were hardened and many of them are transgressors”. (57:16)

Some of the ways of expressing Al-Khushoo’ are as following:

To realize that Quran consists the words of Allah (SWT).

There are different translations given to this verse of the Holy Quran:

M H Shakir writes: “And recite the Quran as it ought to be recited”.

Abdullah Yusuf Ali writes: “And recite the Quran in slow, measured rhythmic tones”.

S V Mir Ahmad Ali writes: “And intone the Quran in a regulated tone”.

THE HOLY QURAN – PART 7 - ETIQUETTES OF QURAN: ISTI’ADHA & BASMALA

We are discussing the rules that have to be observed whilst reciting the Holy Quran. The first rule is of ‘Taharah’ (Purity), as discussed in the last issue of FLZ. The second rule is of ‘Isti’adha & Basmala’.

Isti’adha means seeking refuge in Allah (SWT) from Shaytan (Satan) and Basmala means to begin in the Name of Allah (SWT).

“When you recite the Quran, seek the protection of Allah against the outcast Shaytan. Indeed he does not have authority over those who have faith and put their trust in their Lord ”. (16:98-99)

THE CREATION OF MAN

By Maurice Bucaille – French Academy of Medicine

In the Qur’an the subject of human reproduction leads to a multitude of statements which constitute a challenge to the embryologist seeking a human explanation to them. It was only after the birth of the basic sciences which were to contribute to our knowledge of biology, and especially after the invention of the microscope, that man was able to understand such statements. It was impossible for a man living in the seventh century to have expressed such ideas.

Mustansir Mir

I. The Problem

The Qur'anic verse 2:217 raises a problem which has been exercising the minds of Muslim scholars. The problem has to do with the case-ending of the phrase wa'l-masjidi 'l-harâmi in the verse. As Abű Hayyân says: wa qad khabata 'l-mucribűna fî icrâbi wa 'l-masjidi 'l-harâmi.[1] Rudi Paret calls the verse "rough,"[2] and, although he does not explain where the roughness lies, he probably has in mind the aforementioned problem and the attempts of earlier writers to come to grips with it. In this paper we shall argue first, that the traditional attempts to solve the problem have not been very successful and, second, that a more satisfactory alternative explanation of the problem does exist.

Zawahir al-Qur'an: The Authority of the Book's Literal Meanings

by Ayatullah al-`Uzma al-Sayyid Abu al-Qasim al-Khu'i
Translated from the Arabic by Mujahid Husayn

The author is one of the maraji (legal authorities) of the Shi'i world and one of the most eminent figures in the world of contemporary Islamic scholarship. The translation given here is that of two chapters from his work on Qur'anic exegesis, al-Bayan fi tafsir al-Qur'an : "hujjiyat zawahir al-Qur'an," (the authority of the Qur'anic zawahir), and "usul al-tafsir" (the principles of exegesis).

Two terms need to be understood in regard to the Qur'anic meaning: nusus (sing, nass) and zawahir (sing. zahir). By nusus is meant those Quranic texts which are absolutely clear, being of a single meaning, about which there is no ambiguity whatsoever. The term zawahir refers to those meanings which are the most obvious, although the text may have another, less probable, meaning besides its apparent sense. Although zawahir has been translated here as 'literal meanings' which applies to nusus as well the difference between nusus and zawahir should be noted.

The following paper based on the Qur'an verse 51:49 which describes the nature of creation. It's transliteration into English is, "Wa men kulli shayen khalqna zawgyne la'alakum tadhkaroon." The translation into English is, "And all things have We created in pairs in order that you may reflect on it."
The word 'zawgyne' is consistently translated into the English language as 'pairs.' In scientific literature its meaning is extended to incorporate such concepts as 'duality", 'complementarity', 'opposites', 'inverses' and several other concepts reflecting conjugate and/or reciprocal properties. Terms will be listed below, within their respective disciplines, from the natural, biological and social sciences. We find mentioned in the Tafsir of Ibn Kathir the following pairs of creation: the heavens and the earth, the sun and the moon, light and dark, night and day, the land and the oceans, life and death, Jannah and Narr.

Accordingly, to narrate the accounts of the prophets in the revealed scriptures are of great importance, which constitute a sizable portion of the Torah and the Qur'an. Unfortunately these accounts in the Torah have been distorted and as a result of which, tarnished the beauty of the lives of these nobles. Even some of them have been treated less than ordinary people. While when these accounts are contrasted with the similar accounts in the Qur'an. The greatness of these men and the beauty of the Qur'an come to the fore plainly. What follows is the comparison of the accounts of three prophets (s) viz. These traditions have been compiled in the books of traditions under the headings of "books of traditions", the "book of the excellence of Quran", and the "book of the Merits of Quran". The commentators of the Holy Quran especially the commentators living in the beginning of Islam have narrated these traditions in their books. In addition to the above, some of the earlier scholars have made efforts to write books under the heading of "the book of the Fazl-ul-Quran or the book of Navader-ul-Quran."
