Eid Al-Mubahala

In the 9th year after Hijrah, Prophet Mohammed sent a letter to the Christians of Najran inviting them to accept Islam.  As their response, the Christians sent fourteen representatives to study the facts of Islam.  After discussion and disputes, the Christians declared "Mubahala".  This word is taken from the Arabic root "Bahlah" meaning curse.  So the word means to curse each other.  From both sides they were to bring their closest kin and friends to pray to Allah to curse the other.  On the 24th Zilhajj Prophet Mohammed left his house with Imam Ali, Hassan, Hussain, and his daughter Fatima.  With the Holly Prophet they prayed to Allah.  When the Christians saw who the Prophet brought, they refrained from the "Mubahala".  The Prophet gave them two choices:  accepting Islam as their religion or come to certain terms.  They agreed to certain terms such as signing a peace treaty and paying an annual fee.
Mubahala was important for five reasons:
1)  It showed the Christians of Arabia that Prophet Mohammed was not a man to compete with.
2)  Mubahala was an order from Allah that the Prophet take his Ahlul-Bait.  This event shows how the commands of Allah are not altered.
3)  The positions of Imam Ali, Hassan, and Hussain and Fatima (p) could no longer be argued.
4)  Although Imam Hassan and Hussain were very young, it proved to the people that age makes no difference in being infallible (Masoom).
5)  In choosing a few to join him in the event, Prophet Mohammed elevated their status.
