AL-LIWAAT (SODOMY) - PART 4

Imam Ja’ffar as-Sadiq (as) has said: “penetrating the anal opening is a greater sin than penetrating the vagina. Certainly Allah destroyed a complete nation (people of Lut) because they indulged in sodomy. Allah has not destroyed even one man for adultery”.  (al-Kaafi)

The question which many people, especially the youth, ask today is: Why does Islam condemn homosexuality & lesbianism when research today shows that it is an ‘inborn tendency’?

First of all, it should be understood that research is a continuous process. Today, it will tell you one thing and tomorrow something else which is in contrast of what it had stated earlier on. Besides, our (i.e. of Muslims) compass is the Holy Quran, the Holy Prophet (saw) and his pure progeny (as). Experience in past has clearly shown that whenever any research contradicted these three sources of guidance, it had to correct itself at a later stage.

The best example is of Breast-feeding. Quran & Hadeeth has always encouraged this practise. However, in the past, the researchers bluffed the entire world that it was harmful and they persisted in their belief for more than a decade. Unfortunately, many Muslims with weak Imaan also believed in such researchers and in the process a whole generation grew up on cow milk loosing out the benefits of breast-feeding. Then came a turning point and the same researchers acknowledged their mistake and began promoting breast-feeding.

Similarly, since the Holy Quran has openly condemned sodomy or homosexuality, there is no way we Muslims should believe in the words of researchers who contradict the same.

Secondly, how can homosexuality be taken as an ‘inborn tendency’ when not a single person before the people of Prophet Lut (as) has indulged in it? Quran openly declares the Lut (as) said to his people

“Do you commit a lewdness which no one before you has ever done in the worlds?”   (7:80)

If it was an ‘inborn tendency’ then surely it would have become apparent in some people before !

And thirdly, even if we were to assume that homosexuality is an ‘inborn tendency’, then why did Allah (SWT), who is the Creator of everyone destroy the nation who indulged in it?

Is this justice of God that He Himself creates men in a certain fashion and then punishes them for being what He Himself has created them to be?

The logic therefore rejects the theory of the researchers which justifies in any way that homosexuality is a natural act.

The Holy Prophet (saw) has said: “A person who commits sodomy with a boy will acquire such a Janabah (impurity) that even all the water of this world cannot remove it. Allah will be wrathful at him and curse him. (That is He will take away His Mercy from him and will award hell for him). What a dreadful place it is! Then the Heavens shudder of it. And a person who allows another to mount him from behind to commit sodomy, Allah will put him on the fringe of Hell (in extreme heat) and keep him there till He completes the reckoning of all the people. Then He will order him to be put in Hell. One by one he will be made to suffer all the punishments of Hell till he reaches the lowest stage. Then he will never come out from there”.  (Wasael ash-Shia’h)
