SHURB AL-KHAMR (ALCOHOLIC DRINK) - PART 4

NO CURE IN WINE

Ibn Abi Yazoor once told Imam as-Sadiq (as): “I am suffering from a disease. When the pain intensifies I drink some wine of grapes and he pain subsides”. Imam (as) said, “Do not drink. It is Haraam; It is nothing but Shaitan who is preying upon you to involve you in sins. When he loses all hope of making you drink he will leave you”. Ibn Abi Yazoor returned to Kufa and stopped drinking wine when in pain. He bore the pain for some days and eventually, as the Imam (as) had said, his pain receded and he never suffered from it again.

According to the traditions of Ahlul-Bayt (as) to take wine as medicine is not permissible. The Jurists also unanimously agree that one should refrain from consuming any intoxicant to cure a disease or to ward off pain. Allah has not reposed any curative effect in any intoxicant.

A woman presented herself before Imam as-Sadiq (as) when Abu Baseer was also present. She said:”May I be sacrificed for you, on the day Quiyamah I will tell Allah (SWT) that I have done as instructed by Ja’ffar ibn Muhammad (as). Physicians have told me to knead the flour with grape wine and eat the bread. This will cure the terrible pain of my heart. I ask you, shall I do this?” Imam (as) replied:”No ! By Allah I will not permit you even a drop of wine. Don’t taste even a drop of it. Otherwise when your soul reaches here (Imam pointed towards his throat) you will only regret”. Then the Imam (as) asked the woman thrice: “Have you understood?” and she replied: “Yes”.

Ayatullah Dasti Ghayb writes:

Certain Mujtahids have stated that there are three exceptions where an intoxicant could be taken as medicene. First of all the person should know that his malady is curable. Secondly it must be that if this treatment is not taken it would result in death or extreme pain. Thirdly there should be no other cure for this ailment. If this conditions are fulfilled, the patient can be given an intoxicant as medicene but only just enough to cure his disease.

Furtheron, the Late Ayatullah adds:

Allah (SWT) has not bestowed any cure in a Haraam thing. Hence the above conditions are mentioned just for the sake of obligation. Such a situation can hardly arise.

WINE ON THE DINNER TABLE

If wine is served on a table, it is Haraam to sit there and eat even if one does not  touch the wine.

The Holy Prophet (saw) has said:

“Accursed, accursed is the one who sits at the table where wine is being served”.

Imam as-Sadiq (as) has said:

“Do not sit with drunkards because when the curse descends it engulfs all the people in the company of the drunkards”.

The rulings of Ayatullah Seyyid Ali al-Husseini as-Seestani on this issue is as follows:

It is Haraam to eat at the table on which alcohol or any other intoxicants are being consumed. Based on obligatory precaution, it is Haraam to even sit at such a table.     (No.168/Code of Practice for Muslims in the West).

AHADEETH ON ALCOHOL

The Holy Prophet (saw):

“One who is careless of Salaat (prayer) will be deprived of my intercession, and will not be able to reach me at the pool of Kauthar. And by Allah, my intercession will also not reach the one who consumes intoxicants and he would not be able to reach at the pool of Kauthar”.

Imam al-Baqir (as):

“On the day of Quiyamah the drunkard would come with a black face, a protruding tongue and the saliva dripping upon his chest”.

Imam as-Sadiq (as):

“One who drinks wine considering it Halaal will remain forever in hell. One who drinks wine knowing it is Haraam will taste the punishment of hell”.

Imam ar-Ridha (as):

“Allah knows better that every prophet who has been sent by Him did not have his religion completed till wine was prohibited. Wine has always been Haraam”.
