AL-LIWAAT (SODOMY) - PART 1

THE ORIGIN OF SODOMY:

Sodomy, also known as Homosexuality & Lesbianism, originated from the people of Prophet Lut (as).

Prophet Lut (as) was a maternal cousin of Prophet Ibrahim (as) and his own sister Sara was also the first wife of Prophet Ibrahim (as). He was sent as a prophet to the people of Mutafikaat, a complex of five towns, Sodom being the largest.

The people of Mutafikaat were very wicked and extremely niggardly. The road connecting Egypt with Syria went through their towns. The travellers on this road usually had to break their journey and stay in their towns which the inhabitants did not like.

It is reported that one day Shaytan came to them and taught them the shameful act of homosexuality in order to stop the travellers from taking shelter with them. From then on, they became addicted to this unnatural wickedness.

The other sins which this people also committed were:

Robbery on highways

Throwing stones against people

Wearing long clothes drawing them on earth out of show-off and pride

Wearing open unbuttoned shirts and gowns

Prophet Lut (as) was sent to warn them but they turned a deaf ear to all his warnings and as a result, they were all destroyed by Allah (SWT).

One day Angel Jibrael along with some other angels visited Prophet Ibrahim (as) and told him that they were going to Sodom to carry out the command of Allah (SWT). When they entered the town in human form, Prophet Lut (as) was watering the fields. He warned them to be on guard against the wickedness of the people and took them to his own house as guests and to protect them as well. The wife of Lut (as), who was acting as an agent for the people, informed them at once that Lut (as) had brought some travellers as guests. They surrounded the house of Lut (as) and demanded him to deliver his guests to them. Lut (as) pleaded to them to leave them alone but in vain. Finally, Jibrael disclosed to Lut (as) as to who they really were and thereafter carried out the command of Allah (SWT) and destroyed the people.

Jibrael blinded the people. He then asked Prophet Lut (as) to depart from the town with his family and followers and thereafter, Allah (SWT) rained down on them shower of stones and they were burried under the mountain of such stones.

QURAN:

The following are the verses from Surah al-A’raaf:

“And (We sent) Lut, when he said to his people: Do you commit a lewdness which none in the worlds has done before you?Verily yousatisfy your lust with men instead of women. Nay, you are a wasteful people.

And there was no answer from his people except that they said: Turn them out of your town. Verily they are a people who want to purify (themselves).

So We delivered him and his family, save his wife, who was of those who stayed behind.

And We rained down on them a shower (of stones). See then as to what was the end of the criminals!”.    (7: 80 – 84)

The following are the verses from Surah al-Hood:

“And when the awe departed from Ibrahim, and the glad tidings had come to him, he began to plead with Us for Lut’s people.

Verily Ibrahim was forbearing, compassionate, oft-returning (to Allah).

O Ibrahim, forsake this. Indeed the decree of your Lord has come to pass; and verily for them there comes a torment, irreversible.

And when Our messengers (angels) came to Lut, he was grieved on their account and felt powerless to protect them and said: This is a distressful day.

And his people came rushing towards him; for aforetime they used to do evil deeds. He said: O my people! These are my daughters, they are purer for you, so have fear of Allah, and disgrace me not with regard to my guests. Is there not among you a single right-minded man?

They said: Indeed you know we have no need for your daughters, and verily you know very well what we want.

He said: Would that I had strength to resist you or could betake myself to a strong support!

(The angels)said: O Lut! Verily we are messengers from your Lord. Never shall they reach you. So, leave late at night with your family and none of you should turn back to look; but your wife (will remain behind); verily that which befalls them will befall her. Verily their appointed time is the morning. Is not the morning very near?

So when Our decree came to pass We turned (their township) upside down, and rained on them stones of baked clay, layer upon layer.

Marked as from your Lord; nor are they (the ruins of Sodom) far away from the unjust”.  (11: 74 – 83)
